WebGuion Stewart Bluford Jr. (born November 22, 1942) is an American aerospace engineer, retired United States Air Force (USAF) officer and fighter pilot, and former NASA astronaut, in which capacity he became the first African American to go to space. On August 30, 1983, he rode into Earth orbit on the shuttle orbiter Challenger on the STS-8 mission. Guion Bluford served as a task specialist aboard STS-61A. Stambling Valley As a member of the United States Air Force, Colonel Guion Guy Bluford Jr. fulfilled his life-long dream of taking to the skies as an astronaut on August 30, 1983, becoming the first black man in space. Bluford quit NASA and the Air Force in July 1993 to evolve Vice President/General Manager of the Engineering Division, NYMA, Greenbelt, at Maryland. He got an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering from Penn State in 1964 and made it into the US Air Force.
